These are the brands that have gained the most sales and lost in the EU during 2016

We are already well into the first month of 2017, so we must leave behind 2016 and try to overcome in this new year that awaits us. But to overcome, we must look back and analyze the finished period. Thus, a few days ago we have reviewed the behavior of the automotive sector in our country, as well as what have been the most popular compact, SUV and urban in Spain.

Now we are going to review the behavior of the sector, as well as the most notable increases and decreases in sales at European Union level in 2016. At first, we can say that little by little the very damaged and important sector of motoring for the economy is recovering.


And we do not say it, but the sales data, since the automobile market recorded growth of 6.8% compared to the values ​​obtained in 2015. In all, during the 366 days of 2016 (leap year), in the 14,641,356 cars were marketed, this being the third consecutive year with positive registrations. We should also keep in mind that uncertainty over Brexit could have caused some nervousness in potential buyers. Italy and Spain were the national markets with the highest increase, achieving 15.8% and 10.9% respectively.

The manufacturer that has sold more vehicles in the EU during the Volkswagen Group, delivering no less than 3.5 million cars, representing a growth of 3.5% over 2015. But we must keep in mind that the market has grown A 6.8% as we have said, having lost some points in its market share. No doubt, the dieselgate has been noticed inside the German giant. In terms of sales of units, the Renault Group would be second with 1.496 million cars registered and, very closely, third is the PSA Group with 1.496 million cars sold.

In terms of market share, the largest growth of manufacturers has come from the Renault Group (from 9.7 to 10.2%), FCA Group (from 6.2 to 6.7%) and Daimler (from 5 , 8 to 6.2%). We must also take into account the Jaguar-Land Rover Group (from 1.3 to 1.5%). On the opposite side, the manufacturers that have lost the most market share in 2016 are PSA and the aforementioned Volkswagen Group, which fell by 0.7% in both cases.

By brands, the highest share in 2016 compared to 2015 is Renault, which increased by 0.4% (from 7% to 7.4%), and Mercedes, which increased its share by 0.3% From 5.2 to 5.5%). The increase in Jaguar is important, improving its share by 0.2% (from 0.3 to 0.5%, so its growth is very large). The biggest falls in market share are for the Volkswagen brand, which fell by 0.8% (going from 12.1% to 11.3%), Peugeot, which fell by 0.3% (from 6.1 to 5 , 8%), and Citroën, which also fell 0.3% (from 3.9% to 3.6%).

Among the three German premium brands (Audi, BMW and Mercedes) there is always a “pique” to see which is the one that achieves the most sales. In the EU, the most sold was Mercedes with 807,336 units, followed by Audi with 803,520 sales, leaving BMW in third place with 784,395 sales. Mercedes has turned the table, and that is that closed 2015 in last position of these three marks. All three have improved their sales compared to 2015, but the best job has been, with Mercedes, which has increased its sales records by no less than 14.2%, from a market share of 5, 2 to 5.5%.

The only brands that have achieved the worst record in 2016 are Volkswagen (0.5% less), Citroën (1% less), DS (surprising 12.7% drop), Nissan (0.8% less) And Mitsubishi (a significant drop of 14%).
